Micheleen Florists

An indoor-market florist in a building most Glaswegians have opinions about.

The verdict

The Savoy Centre is a survivor of a particular Glasgow retail era. An indoor arcade of small independent units on Sauchiehall Street, still trading while glossier developments around it have come and gone. Micheleen Florists operates out of a unit inside it, and the economics of that location produce the cheapest serious flowers in the city centre.

This is not design floristry and it does not claim to be. It is volume, value and speed: wrapped bunches, straightforward arrangements, and prices that reflect a low-rent indoor unit rather than a Byres Road frontage. If your criterion is stems-per-pound within walking distance of Buchanan Street, this is very hard to beat. If your criterion is a considered palette, look elsewhere on this list.

Best for

Maximum flowers for minimum money in the city centre; buying in bulk for an event you are arranging yourself.

What I would order

Single-variety bunches in quantity, and do your own arranging at home.

Worth knowing

Inside a shopping arcade, so hours follow the centre's, not a florist's. Almost no online presence at all.

Cheaper than anywhere else in the city centre, and entirely unbothered about being fashionable.

Who it is not for

Gifts where the presentation matters as much as the flowers. This is a value proposition, cheerfully and openly.

How it compares

If you want the arrangement done properly rather than doing it yourself, Lillians is two hundred yards up the same street.

Getting there

Sauchiehall Street, between Buchanan Street and Cowcaddens subway stations.
